Greetings Dragons! There’s a lot to do for AP applications this week. Did you see my email on Saturday? If not, check out the document below to help guide you through the AP / honors application and general scheduling processes.
Uniforms:
All teachers are on the lookout for students who are out of uniform. Please watch out as you could end up in Saturday detention…or worse...😮
Phones:
There have been a few phones brought down to the HS office lately. So I’m wondering if there is some confusion about when students can or cannot use phones. Basically, students may not use phones during the academic day, 8:20am-3:33pm, unless explicitly told otherwise by a teacher. Meaning, if your teacher didn’t say, “Use your phone," you can’t use your phone.
Additionally, by use I mean “see" your phone. If we see it, we will assume you are using it. That includes in the cafeteria, the library, and between classes. After 3:33pm its open season: Use all the phones you have (😉 )
Service hours:
If you have unrecorded service hours from previous years you may use the service form to record them. Please record all similar hours in one submission. So, if you want to record SLL hours you can put all of those hours on one form submission. Just make sure you double check how many hours you should put there. One of the most important parts of the form is the Honor Statement, which asks you to confirm the correctness of your submission. If you say you did more service hours than you actually completed you are not being very honest, are you? Questions? Email me.

Welcome back (again) and Happy New Year (again:-)!
We’re back and running from the opening bell this week and it’s going to be a bit of a marathon. No time off till…Spring Break! Hopefully, though, you’ve all enjoyed your vacation to recover from your other vacation. I especially needed this ‘recovery vacation’ as I was so worn out from winter break that I could barely focus. I’m just saying, vacation can be tough. 😉
My point is..let’s not forget how awesome the KISJ life is. Not only do we get to spend so much quality time together with our friends at school, we also get to share with them about how great all of our time off was!
Electives Showcase (G9-11):
Please go directly to the PAC on Monday morning. Your advisors are expecting to see you there and not in their classrooms.
AP Showcase (G9-11):
Don’t forget about this one either..Monday, right after school in the PAC.
**Some tips on scheduling**:
  • Use the course guide.
  • Understand now your GPA may affect your schedule.
  • Keep in mind how many elective choices you have for all four years at KISJ.
  • If you have questions about a class, talk to the teacher (begin to build a relationship early) and /or your counselor.
  • Maximum 2 study halls for all students.

Dragon Descant 23 January 2017

Posted on January 16th, 2017

What’s up Dragons?! Enjoying your Sunday? Hopefully most of you are inside now as today is one of those crazy Jeju winter days. How about a nice, warm campfire..go ahead, just put your toes up to the screen..ahhh.

Next week we have another holiday. How are you feeling about that?
And let’s welcome back all those SAT takers who had to go all the way to NRT to take the test..Hope you did well!

Recording Service Hours:
Have you performed service this year? Will you perform any during second semester. We have a new way for you to record all of your hours. Essentially, you will need to fill out a form each time you do any kind of service whether it is with a faculty member or not. Take a look at this slide show and you’ll find most of the answers to your questions there.

Going to the dorms before 3:30pm:
Hi Seniors! Yes, I’m speaking directly to all of you grade 12 students (but this applies to everyone). Don’t go to the dorms before 3:30pm, M-F 😃

Incorrect Important dates:
If you see an incorrect date on the Descant, please send me an email to correct it. Its a real challenge for me to keep up with everyone’s schedule. And then everyone’s schedule changes and I don’t get the update. So, please just email me if you see something wrong.

Uniforms:
I know that this is a repeat but please do not wear non-KISJ gear during the academic day. I have seen many, many students doing this in every grade. Sweaters, hoodies, pants………etc. If you’re cold, wear your vest, blazer or KISJ baseball jacket. Or all of them!! Our uniform is a part of who we are at KISJ. It is a part of our visible culture that, in my opinion, relays a message of professionalism and respect. And, please keep in mind that we have made adjustments to the uniform (shoes, jacket) to help you guys feel warmer, and cooler, while wearing them.

Hey there Dragons! Is everyone feeling well rested after the break. We’re just one week into school and already we’ve had a great event at the winter formal. We were laughing..dancing..eating..taking selfies..and getting awards! Which reminds me..Congratulations to Kyle Jung for receiving the student-voted DRAGONS award. You deserve it!

Scheduling for next year is coming up fast. Your counselor and advisor will be working with you to help figure out what you will want to take next year. You can see some of the scheduling dates coming up in the next six weeks down below.

From the HS library:
This is the FINAL reminder ... the no bags and no food in the library rule applies to Grade 12 students (Seniors) as well as all the other students in the High School.
During Study Hall, your bag goes into a locker and does not go further than 2 metres into the library.
For those students who choose to ignore this, you are demonstrating an inability to comply with the library policies. As this is a condition of your study hall access to the library, you will be asked to leave the library and return to your study hall room. This applies at ALL TIMES!

Dragon Descant 12 December 2016

Posted on December 9th, 2016

This is the end. Thankfully though, with every ending there is also a new beginning and such is the way with semesters one and two. I’m sad to say goodby to such good times from S1 and yet, so happy that S2 is only a few weeks away 😃
Before you go, please review the S1 exam rules that I have posted in the past three week’s Descant and remember to be in the cafeteria 15 minutes before the beginning of your test.
The Q2 DRAGONStars! party is tomorrow, Monday, 12/12. Check the list if you don’t remember if you’ve been nominated..today’s DRAGONStars! are also welcome 😃
Date Change:
Winter formal has been moved to the first Friday of our return, January 13th. StuCo will also have an assembly that week to welcome us back on January 10th.
No more shivers: Beginning now, students are able to wear the KISJ letterman jacket (aka baseball jacket) inside to classes. If you don’t have one, get one over the winter break and you will be able to wear it all day long in the freezing cold caverns we call hallways this winter. I’ve noticed that there are two versions of this jacket. Both are blue with white arms and basically look like this one! They should keep you nice and cozy once it gets really cold out.
Upcoming Dates:
12/17: Winter Break!!
1/9: Semester 2 Begins!!!
1/10: StuCo Assembly
1/13: Winter Formal
1/21: SAT
1/25: Orchestra Concert

Happy December, Dragons!
If you see your name at the bottom of this page, please come to the office to get your picture taken. The photo board is starting to get pretty cool, but, I can’t celebrate your amazingness if you don’t come down for a photo!

The countdown is on..I don’t think I need to say much more about the importance of the next two weeks. But I’ll just say this one tiny thing…the next two weeks are very important. So please stay focused on what your teachers are asking you to do. They are the people who can help you the most with your studies as you prepare for finals.
😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
Dead Week: Except for boys basketball, there are no extracurriculars or clubs next week. Use your time wisely!
A(nother) review of the exam rules for this semester:
Academic Honesty: All students must sign the HS Cheating Policy before being allowed to take any HS semester exams. Failure to sign the policy will result in an F on the exams (If you haven’t done this, please do it ASAP). Your advisor will provide a copy of the policy for each of you to sign.
Dress for exam days: Students may wear the relaxed uniform on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Dec 13-16). Relaxed uniform consists of dark pants or jeans and KIS shirt. No shorts, sweat pants, athletic pants, pajamas, or skirts are allowed. Rubber-bottomed shoes are preferred for the gym. Failure to dress accordingly may result in missing an exam.
Procedures on the day of the exams: All students must report to the cafeteria at least 15 minutes before the exam. Please sit with your class period for that specific exam. You will be called into the hallway by grade and will enter into the gym by class period. You must stay in the gym in your seat for the duration of the exam. All grade 9-11 students must be in the HS building until 12:30 on exam days.
***Grade 9-11 students who do not have a morning exam must stay above the first floor.***
Senior privileges: Boarding seniors will have dorm privileges during the exams on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Dec 13- 16). Day seniors do not have to be at school if you do not have a final. If you do not have a scheduled exam, you may stay in your dorm room to study or rest. If you miss an exam because of poor planning, you will not be able to make it up. All other students must be in the school until 12:30. There are no exceptions to this.
Finally, day students are not permitted in the dorms during exam week, December 11-17.
To Review:
  • Sign academic honest policy
  • Dress correctly for the exams (see above)
  • No day students in the dorm for the entire week (M-F)
  • G9-11 dorm students can enter dorms at 12:30pm.
  • G12 Students can be in dorms anytime they don’t have a test.
  • When your exams are done, please say: Congratulations! You have witnessed a genius at work!

From the Library:
Do you want to build a snowman (or a gingerbread man)?
The end of term is almost here and there are lots of things that need to be done ... study, study, assessments, and more study! In these times, it is really important that you also take time to relax. Over the next two weeks, the HS library will be offering some craft activities to help you remain calm during those times when you need a break!
Get creative! Make a gingerbread man to hang in your dorm room! There is also a snowman and a penguin as well. Other suggestions are welcome, so please share your ideas.
To participate we ask that you are respectful of the needs of others. This requires you to keep the craft area clean and please keep noise to a minimum. Finally, if you are using the glue gun ensure that you turn it off after use.
Please see Ms Cave in the library if you have any questions.

II am continuing to work with the counseling department in order to make the Descant more robust for all of you. That work will hopefully result in weekly updates from the Community Center posted here. In it will be updates on college visits, summer programs, and upcoming deadlines.
Just click the link for CC Updates.
Important Dates:
12/5-12/17: Prep time: No clubs, performances, practices or other events in the HS for finals.
12/6: BHA@KISJ Boys Basketball 5pm; NLCS @KSIJ Girls Basketball 5:15

Hey there Dragons,
The semester has flown by! While we will all miss semester one terribly, we can celebrate it with a grand finale 😉 before welcoming semester two.
As a school, we should keep a record of things that have happened. Sometimes those records are photos and who best to take the pictures than our yearbook class students. But, its hard for them to get all of the pictures they need if others are pestering them to view and check the perfectness of each picture taken of them. Please, let the yearbook folks do their work and take pictures without having to have each picture pre-approved by all of you.
TEDxKISJeju:
Tedx was a complete success! That’s the only way I can describe it. Perhaps fantastic? It is an honor for our school to have hosted Jeju’s submission to the global conversation of TED talks. I want especially wish to thank Mrs. Stearman and Raymond Kil for their contributions. I would also like to congratulate each of our volunteers, performers, presenters, and organizers for their efforts in making the entire event run smoothly and adding a some fun. Well done!

Spirit day / Advisory shirt day:
All students will be able to wear their spirit wear which includes advisory t-shirts, sports uniforms, club gear, etc., each month on the second Tuesday. This coincides with our StuCo assemblies and will be a good way for everyone to express their spirit together. There is one exception to this which is the senior advisory winner for the weekly challenge. They will be able to wear their spirit wear the the Monday following their win. Keep in mind that whenever you wear spirit wear you must wear normal uniform bottoms that day. Everyone must follow these guidelines in order for spirit day to continue.
**Note to all students and faculty: The December Stuco assembly will take place on Tuesday, December 6th (the 1st Tuesday of Dec.) due to finals week. Students may wear spirit gear on this day.
Uniform Checks:
We will be conducting weekly uniform checks but you may not know when they are going to happen. I have spoken with the teachers and they have agreed to check their class’ uniforms and mark students in PS for any issues. Non KISJ gear is not permitted (I think you know this already!).
A review of the exam rules for this semester:
Academic Honesty: All students must sign the HS Cheating Policy before being allowed to take any HS semester exams. Failure to sign the policy will result in an F on the exams (If you haven’t done this, please do it ASAP). Your advisor will provide a copy of the policy for each of you to sign.

Good day, Dragons! We must start off with a huge congratulations to our first time KISAC Red girls volleyball champions! You brought home a well deserved trophy. The boys and girls JV also had good showings with second place finishes. A big weekend, a big tournament, and 3 successful runs highlighted by the lady VB Dragons!
Some good news for seniors:
Seniors, on Wednesday and Thursday of exam week you may have no exams. If you don’t have exams you can stay in or go back to the dorms. Dorm staff will be there. Day students cannot enter the dorms during exam week. That’s Monday Dec. 13th to Friday Dec. 16th, no day students in the dorms. Next week, I will announce the regular and AP exam schedule.
Also, seniors, you must wear a tie..but you can wear any tie you’d like. Yes, that’s right. Pick a tie, any tie, and wear it.
Spirit Day
We have some new rules for alternative dress days:
  1. In recognition of senior accomplishments to this point, and the status the G12 students have garnered as the oldest/most experienced students at KISJ, we believe seniors have earned the right to claim Mondays as their exclusive day to use if/when the G12 teachers decide that special t-shirts / hoodies are to be worn by one or more advisories or other subgroups. However, uniform bottoms must always be worn. No jeans, sweatpants, or shorts will be permitted.

  2. G9, G10, and G11 students will be permitted one day per month to wear any special t-shirt / hoodie that their grade-level teachers approve for the advisories or other sub-groups. This day will be the second Tuesday of each month, which coincides with regularly-scheduled STUCO assemblies. However, uniform bottoms must always be worn. No jeans, sweatpants, or shorts will be permitted.
Running to lunch. Here is your final warning. All students must stop running to lunch or all students will be effected by new policy. You must stop running to lunch.
